Kosta Botunjac is 4th generation winemaker who revived the family’s vines and winery in 1991, releasing his first vintage in 1999.
His grandfather Dragomir Botunjac would send instructions on winemaking from his internment in a POW camp in 1942. Kosta still uses these directions in his “Pino Botunjac”.
He is responsible for reviving the almost forgotten Jagoda grape. A fruity, foxy (indications are that it may have part vitis labrusca heritage) grape that translates as “strawberry” as it is said to taste like wild strawberries.
He found Jagoda growing at the edges of the vineyard where it ripened early and was picked and eaten by passers-by. He now shares these vines with other produces in Serbia interested in producing Jagoda wines, however Botunjac Jagoda is unanimously considered the best.
