Brkić Family Winery

The Brkić family have been growing grapes and making wine for centuries, however their current entity dates back to 1979 when brothers Jozo & Paško planted 0.5 Ha of vines, then bottling and selling under their own label since 1994.

Following his death in 1989, Paško’s son Josip took over and oversaw the conversion of the vineyards to organic, then in 2007 to biodynamic – the first of its kind in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Josip’s 3 sons (twins Paško & Jozo and younger brother Filip) gradually got involved helping out in the winery with Paško now in charge of the winemaking, Jozo the commercial management while they wait for Filip to finish his studies before joining them. Josip now dedicates himself fully to the vineyard.

The winery now has 4Ha of productive vines, 70% of which is white Žilavka.
1.5Ha of new vines have been planted (2023/24), including Trnjak which will be harvested in 2028.
They use a variety of small Bosnian oak barrels, and large, 3kL Slavonian oak barrels made in Austria.

All fermentation is with indigenous yeast, and bottling is done gently from the barrel by hand without any mechanical pumps or filtration.

Of the 15-20,000 bottles / year produced, 95% of which is sold domestically.

Their wines are clean and modern style, yet respecting tradition and the overall ecosystem of the vineyard.

Brkić produce 5 labels :

  • Žilavka  –  fresh, 100% Žilavka.
  • Greda  –  barrel fermented Žilvka, aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak.
  • Mjesećar  –  (mye-se-char) “Moonwalker” – an orange wine from selected Žilavka grapes fermented and aged on skins for up to 12 months.
